Cutting parents out of their children's lives and urging kids to keep secrets from them will never lead to anything good. AB 1955, known as "The Safety Act," was introduced by the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus. Unsurprisingly, Senator Scott Weiner was part of that body.
AB 1955 claims to keep children safe, but it does the exact opposite. It allows children to be socially transitioned at school without parental knowledge. Depending on the district, laws like AB 1955 could even lead to schools secretly giving breast binders to girls once their parents drop them off at school. This is a direct attack not only on parental rights but also on the wellness of these children. Social transition is a very intense psychosocial intervention that often leads directly to irreversible medical harm.
After Samuel's passionate speech, the Huntington Beach council passed the "Parents' Right to Know" ordinance in a 4-3 vote. As of now, Huntington Beach is the only city in California countering Governor Newsom's AB 1955! This is why we put so much effort into speaking out against the war on children. Speaking out works.
Here is Samuel's speech:
Growing up gay, I just want to say that what we are talking about here... it is not homophobic to not want to associate with legislation that promotes faculty teaching children how to keep secrets from their parents.
It is not homophobic to pass an ordinance rejecting the unconstitutional provisions of AB 1955.
It is not homophobic or transphobic to hold the principle that people, including parents, are innocent until proven guilty. AB 1955 assumes that all parents can’t handle information regarding their own children.
Listen, the concept that AB 1955 protects children from neglect and other abuse is a farce. We already have these laws on the books. And the faculty should know this, as mandated reporters. If you suspect something or see something, you report it to the proper authorities for a proper investigation.
I encourage this council not to waver in your duties to uphold the law and our Constitution, despite the heckling of some of the harlequins that you will hear tonight, for sure.
